Hey guys!
I started this petition. Please sign it!
https://www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/stephen-harper-stop-wasting-money-on-the-action-plan-ads
Background:
Over tens of millions of dollars have been spent in “Economic Action Plan” ads since 2009. The Finance department alone spent over $25 million. Natural Resources Canada has budgeted $9 million in the current 2012-13 fiscal year for ads. This is on top of the tens of millions of ad spending by other departments.
We are growing tired of these TV, radio, print and Internet ads. We got the point.
“They don’t reflect people’s daily experience. And at a time when the government says it wants to be fiscally prudent, it’s wasting huge sums of money on these ads for projects that have already been long finished. What is the point?” – MP Peggy Nash
The frivolous spending doesn’t stop there. The government spent $300,000 on polling firms just to find out how Canadians feel about these ads. They don’t need to hire a firm to know that Canadians feel that this is “propaganda” and “a waste of money”. Let this petition be a bold indicator as to how Canadians really feel about these ads.

Hello,
So like I mentioned before, I will be recording original songs for a new album.
Here is a preview of one of the songs I tried out on the crowd at Ye Olde Orchard Jam yesterday! And if any musicians are reading this, this pub is a great place to play. The host, Mike Hand, was very cheerful! Young crowd, nice location, and friendly people. And unlike most open mics in Montreal, there were no comedians! So I will be going there more often. : )

I am just one person. But change starts with one person.
This is how one person is defeating capitalism this year:
I am vermicomposting. This has so many benefits! Up to 40% of my garbage will now be transformed into fertile soil that will be used for my herb garden. How does this have to do with capitalism? Well, for one thing, I won’t need to buy herbs and soil. But in the grand scheme of things, I will contribute less to garbage pick ups and landfill expenses that our tax money is paying for. I am giving the budget more room to pay for meaningful things like, healthcare and education! All our actions have an impact.
I will make vermicomposting bins for others. The worms in the bin can double their population every 3-4 months. They will stop breeding when the bin is full. But I won’t let it get there. If I make a new bin for someone every 3-4 months, and they in turn make a new bin for others, and so on, then something significant would have happened. I did the math. If I follow this program, in 2013 I can prevent 156 litres of garbage from going to the landfills. In 2014, 2560 litres of garbage will be prevented from going to the landfills. I will write a blog post about this new program I made for myself..
I will not buy any new clothes. I feel like I have accumulated enough since I grown into a full size adult, which has been eight years or so.
I will continue to live like a stoic. And it’s not so bad! I don’t own a car. I don’t have cable. I don’t have TV. I pay very low rent, and very rarely, if at all, buy alcohol. Going to music jams and living in a vibrant neighbourhood and eating good food is what makes my day to day life fun.
I will avoid eating at restaurants. It’s really hard, but if I watch Zietgiest once a week, I am sure I will have the motivation and develop the discipline.
I will bring awareness. I am publishing this blog. Also, in my upcoming album, I will have many songs about debt slavery and human trafficking.
Bonus:
I will attend at least five protests this year.
I will learn more about independant energy.
I will learn more about hydroponic farming. I will learn more about vertical hydroponic farms.
I will read more about how others are living off-grid.
Now will the world be a magical place in 2014?

I love Christmas! To me it’s turning another calendar month into fun! I love the colours! Red, white and green. I love the bright lights. I love how creative people can be with decorating their trees and their home. The gingerbread cookies, the clothes, and the music. Christmas is art for life.
It really makes me cringe to hear people call these beautiful holidays as just marketing ploys. Businesses use holidays to their advantage, but we can choose to buy into them.
I don’t like how people blow off all the festivities of Christmas as religious and prefer living blandly. Religion creates holidays for their advantage, but we can choose to believe in them, we can make our own interpretation as to what to believe in.
So first on the marketing argument:
Buying gifts for people in this day and age is ridiculous. Buying cards is a waste of money. And don’t even make me get into gift cards, and even gift registries! Everyone has what they want, and if they didn’t they would have bought it already. There is a good chance that the item you got for someone is something they don’t want. There is a bigger chance that the item you got for someone is something they don’t need. And for some reason we have to be polite and grateful. This is the attitude that marketing guys are content with. So here is my anti-consumerist alternative option in the same spirit of gift giving. Instead of buying gifts for people, why don’t you provide a service?
Provide a 30 minute service to each person on your gift giving list. 30 minutes is how long it probably takes on average to buy a gift. It’s probably more when taking into consideration the transportation time, the line ups and even the time it takes to put on your boots to get out of your house. But I’m sure your friend would be more thrilled with a 30 minute of your service coupon that can be redeemed any time of the year.
I could use a 30 minute service too. So, friend, please don’t add another candle to my house. Please use the time you used to get me the candle and the hours it took to earn the money for the candle into some help. What I could really use is some help with carrying new furniture into my home, or someone to edit my grant forms, or help with my housework or help with gardening. Maybe you could argue that we should always be available to help our friends, but in our world of ‘every man for himself’ people aren’t as eager to help just as much as they aren’t eager to ask for help.
And now to solve the problem with money on decorations:
Artists are some of the poorest people I know, yet have the nicest homes, and coolest clothes. Creativity is not relative to finances! Once you buy your Christmas decorations, why do you need to buy them again the next year? Why do you need to buy a real Christmas tree that will die in a few weeks? Get a fake tree and use the same Christmas decorations as last year! Use your inner artist to arrange them differently to look different and keep it fresh.
As for religion:
So you are an atheist. Does that mean in atheist world we can’t ever follow tradition? We can’t have fun? We can’t have a certain theme for certain days of the year to mark the passage of time? Is it impossible to decorate your house and eat gingerbread cookies without celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ?
And also: yes, I will still call it CHRISTmas, because I like the sound of that word and I grew up celebrating CHRISTmas. And I think Santa Clause is a perfect mascot for this time, just because it was thought of by marketing Coca Cola guys, doesn’t mean we have to write it off immediately as evil. I think the idea of an old man who lives in the north pole and keeps warm with a red robe and travels with reindeers is a very funny idea, so I will keep it.
So knock Christmas if you want, but I won’t! I am entitled to a festive yet anti-consumerist & non-religious Christmas.
